1st visit to sephora

Category |

I went to Sephora for the first time today.

Tim and the kids waited outside in the car with the air-conditioning running - and I ran in to try to get "color-matched" for a tinted moisturizer.

At thirty-four years old, I still don't wear any make-up besides my signature red lipstick. In part, I've just never wanted to spend any of my spare minutes on cosmetics. I'd much rather be lacing up my shoes for a run or racing through the pages of a book, rocking my baby or lingering over a cup of coffee.

Lately, though, I have been intrigued by the thought of doing a bit more. My skin isn't the same as it was in my early 20's and it certainly isn't in its finest hours in this postpartum period.

My idea this morning was that I'd like to find a good tinted moisturizer to help even out my skin tone - brighten and lighten and add some glow. All the promises on the bottle.

So there I was in the middle of Sephora - surrounded by mirrors and product samples and shimmering lights. The people behind the counters reminded me of the Hunger Games with bright lips, dark eyes, and confident strides. The woman who assisted me was friendly and found my "skin tone" without delay, after I answered her questions ("Oily or dry?" "Natural look?" "Sunscreen or not?"). The price tag on the Laura Mercier bottle read $44.

I politely asked for a sample and quickly exited - but not before quickly tapping on some undereye concealer and using a wand to "curl & lengthen" my lashes. (Did you know you can sample almost every product in the store? THAT'S pretty fun.)

Back in the car, my 10-year-old daughter looked at me quizzically, "Why are your eyes so dark?" Apparently, my make-up skills are lacking. Either that, or the bottle's promises are. Probably a bit of both.

Our family went to Lowe's next, where we filled up a rolling cart with rose bushes, snapdragons, an assortment of other flowers, and a sweet potato vine. The back of our Pilot was bursting with plants and the smell of gardenias. The total came to $88.

"Not bad for hours of happiness," Tim remarked in the check-out lane. I nodded my head.
